I got glued to wikiHow lately.  Not only is it a site brimmed with great info, it is also a place of marvel.  All the articles are on free will contribution - a free-for-all non-profit work of caring people from around the world.

I stumbled upon this while doing random searching for stuff I wish to obviously know how to get done.

There are a lot of interesting as well as weird How-Tos in wikiHow.  Here's a few:

As you can see, the fun gets more interesting.  This is what I call having fun while learning.  What you will learn is a different issue here...

Speaking with all the inproper grammar is not an abvious thing to detect but writing a poorly composed email or message won't be that forgiving.  While most of the mistakes in writing are minor and go undetected, they still pose a sense of embarrassment when someone pointed them out directly or subtly.

Recently I came across a very informative blog on writing.  Daily Writing Tip is a collective blog by four highly qualified editor/writer/copywriter/consultant.  Every blog is compact and packed with info.  The message is clear and revealing.

Check it out!   Don't forget to subcribe to its RSS.

P.S.  I can't help but feel very conscious about my how do my written language fair right now...

When Books Talk...

Yup, people read books...and that's common. I listen to some of them.

You see, the world has been in a constant change. Since the early 20th century, filmmakers have been adapting books to films. But what is lesser known to the general public is that with the invention of cassette, books have been read and recorded. Yup, someone read the book in cassettes and when you play it, it reads to you and it is like listen to a story...only that it was read and pre-recorded to cassettes (and also CDs) thus I call it 'listening to a book'!

They are known as audiobooks. It is ideal in situations whereby you are not a reader (and most Malaysians by concensus aren't), or you are just plain busy commuting around or perhaps you just want to keep your ears occupied during your daily chores.

An Ultra Short History on Audio Book

We have play writers dramatizing verbal stories to stage plays as early as the most ancient civilization itself.  When papers were invented, we had been documenting our verbal stories into books.  When moving pictures came into the scene in the early 20th century, filmmakers had been adapting books to films. When vinyl records and later cassette tapes, compact disc (CD) and digital media were invented, we have audio books … and recorded music also.

Types of Audio Books

Audio books can come in two types: the unabridged and the abridged version.  The unabridged version refers to the full version of the book.  The book is recorded word-by-word from the foreword all the way to the epilogue.  It is as complete as getting the physical book and read it yourself.  The abridged version on the other hand is the ‘summarized’ version of the book.  This version is ideal for listeners who want to get the main points of the book in a few hours of pleasure listening.

And So...

Audiobooks are wonderful stuff. I can get them from the local bookstores or visit Audible.com. For the more adventurous ones, you can visit the dark alleys of cyberspace to leech a copy or two.

Nowadays, I drive and listen to these audiobooks. Some of them are really good...and when the reader reads it with compassion, man, the book comes to life! Try it!!!

Reading on The Web

I stumbled across this wonderful site that talks about How Users Read the Web.  Very insightful for bloggers and all web publishers alike.

I do agree that people don't actually read stuff in webpages.  We more or less just scan through them...much like how we flip through the daily newspapers...only that on the web we scroll and click away from one link to the other.

After scanning through the article (heh, I am actually doing exactly what the article says), I find out that I have been the a strict practitioner of the 124% usability improvement category since my college years..even until today while I am blogging.  Looks like my strong support for parenthesis, bolding main points and bullet-point driven writing style pay off in a very positive manner.

Between Being Busy and Being Occupied

User photo not available Wednesday, 24 January 07 - 10:25 PM (GMT +08:00)
By Sing Chie Tie in Productivity

Most of the time, people is just occupied and not busy. Busy is when things you need to do is urgent and important. Occupied is when things you need to do is important but not too urgent.

Thus based on that argument above, we am most of the time occupied. we know most people won't care much about this but separating them will give me a good control over things. Being busy means we may need to skip meals, miss family appointments and such. However being occupied is just that we have things to do but not truly so busy until we start to skip meals or kind.  We are just working on something that could be our passion or something that we can do without feeling the pressure of mental and physical stress.

Give it a thought.  When you are really into something and loss track of time, ask yourself this, "Am I busy or am I occupied?"
