Yup, its him again! Weird Al! His the greatest when it comes to parodying songs.
We all know Star Wars. This year (2007) marks the 30th anniversary of the highly (if not the most) successful space opera of all time. In 1999, Star Wars Episode I: The Phantom Menace was released. At around the same time the movie hit cinemas worldwide, Weird Al released his album Running With Scissors and The Saga Begins is its first singles.
The Saga Begins is sung to the tune of American Pie (not the movie). If you miss out on Episode I, then this song sums everything that took place in the movie for you in the eyes of Obi-Wan Kenobe in a rather sequencial and humorous way. Keep you eyes open for famous Star Wars characters and some really interesting dance moves in the MTV that I believe you can relate to...
Retro MTV #006: Los del Río - Macarena

This is an example of a song whereby it is remembered for its tune, rythm as well as its dance moves (which is pretty darn simple). The next thing people remember is that the song was sung by two old men. That's it! When being asked who they are, few would know.
The song Macarena first hit the airwave in August 1995 by a Spanish duo Los del Río. The duo is Antonio Romero Monge and Rafael Ruiz from the city section of Dos Hermanas in Seville.
The song was associated with a distinctive fast dance. It originally had no dance, until a Venezuelan Flamenco (Flamenco is a type of Spanish dance) instructor created it for her class to dance to, and it eventually caught on with the rest of the world. The Macarena dance is performed in time with the refrain of the song.

This parody is a dedication to all cubicle dwellers worldwide. It is a parody for James Blunt famous smash hit "You're Beautiful".
The beautiful thing about this parody is that almost everyone who works in cubicles more than half of their waking hours in a day will put up a good laugh and nod their heads. I am one of them.
This one is my favorite music video for the parody produced by a fellow Malaysian. Here goes..."My Cubicle".
This is the karaoke version (sort of the original version). Same song just more bland.
There's more than one version of the parody video. You are encouraged to youtube or google for it.

The rythm of this next video is so wildly popular that everyone can clap or stamp their foot to it. 'We Will Rock You' is around three decades old and it is an example of a hit that transcend time thanks to an English rock band - Queen.
Queen is formed in London by Brian May, Freddie Mercury and Roger Taylor, with John Deacon joining the following year. The band rose to prominence during the 1970s and were Britain's most successful band of the past three decades.
There are quite a few version of the song. One version was used as the opening track on their 1977 album 'News of the World'. This is the version consists of a stamping-clapping beat, and a power chorus, being somewhat of an anthem. When performed live, this version is usually followed by 'We Are the Champions', another of the album's hits, as they were both made to lead into each other.
I will feature the 'stand-alone' version of 'We Will Rock You'.
Trivial
The younger audience will find this video clip below rather refreshing. A version of the song was performed by Beyoncé, Britney Spears and Pink in a Pepsi TV ad only shown in the UK, Brazil and Malaysia. The scenario was the Collosseum in ancient Rome; Pink, Beyoncé and Britney were female gladiators who defeated the emperor - played by Enrique Iglesias - by singing "We Will Rock You" together with the audience.

"Weird Al" Yankovic is not a stranger in the music indusrty. His works have earned him three Grammy Awards amongst nine nominations, four gold records, and six platinum records in the U.S.

Retro MTV #004: Suzanne Vega - Luka

Not many folks can relate well with this song...that is if they ever heard of this song over the airwave. The song Luka was first featured in Suzanne Vega's second album Solitude Standing (1987) which later began quite a commercial hit with two hit singles - one being 'Luka' and the other 'Tom's Diner'.
According to Suzanne Vega in a 1987 Swedish television:
A few years ago, I used to see this group of children playing in front of my building, and there was one of them, whose name was Luka, who seemed a little bit distinctive from the other children. I always remembered his name, and I always remembered his face, and I didn't know much about him, but he just seemed set apart from these other children that I would see playing. And his character is what I based the song Luka on. In the song, the boy Luka is an abused child—in real life I don't think he was. I think he was just different.
Here is 'Luka'.

Welcome back. Next we have one of the most appropriate parody of its time. eStudio.com came out with a perfect parody to celebrate the coming of age of the Internet. They invented The Broad Band and their one and only (exactly, THE only AND only) smash hit singles "Internet Killed The Video Stars".
As The Buggles celebrated the era of VCRs with "Video Killed The Radio Stars", here's The Broad Band coming in to welcome us into a whole new era...
Retro MTV #003: Pet Shop Boys - Go West

Most of us have heard the song "Go West" from time to time over the radio. The song was first featured in the Village People album of the same name. The song was just a moderate hit then until Pet Shop Boys resampled the song in 1993.
Pet Shop Boys are an English electronic/pop music duo, consisting of Neil Tennant who provides main vocals, keyboards and very occasionally guitar, and Chris Lowe on keyboards and occasionally on vocals.
Pet Shop Boys' version of "Go West" MTV was memorable for its 'the West is a greener pasture' concept. It was featured with a very Soviet Union imagery (such as red stars) and the Red Army troops marching up a flight of stairs into heaven punctuated by the Statue of Liberties at every milestones - a Western utopia.
Here's the Pet Shop Boys' "Go West"...
I am also paying tribute to the original version of the song by Village People for they deserve it too. Let's get gay...er...I mean happy as we enjoy the classic...
